It was a shock when I thought that my driver’s license might no longer be valid and would have to be renewed due to the 50-year rule.
That’s what I read in the online documents, and that’s what the ADAC told me during the consultation.
The citizens’ office also confirmed it but said I had to contact the driver’s license authorities.
Even a large driving school in Munich couldn’t give me a definitive answer over the phone and left me uncertain that I could ONLY get binding information from the driver’s license authority.
So far, no one could give me binding information.
The driver’s license authority (KVR Munich) had not responded since my inquiry on September 15. That’s 15 days ago, as of today.
It’s impossible to reach anyone by phone there for such information.
All in all, it was very unsatisfactory, almost bordering on “panic” about not being allowed to drive once the motorhome arrived.
Yesterday, that changed. I received a written and, for me, binding answer!
What did I do? I simply took a photo of my driver’s license and sent it with the relevant questions to the driving school I attended. Now the answer has arrived. Hooray!
“You are now allowed to drive (and will remain so)
Class C1E:
Vehicle combinations consisting of a towing vehicle of class C1 and a trailer or semi-trailer with a permissible total mass exceeding 750 kg, provided that the permissible total mass of the vehicle combination does not exceed 12,000 kg,
of class B and a trailer or semi-trailer with a permissible total mass exceeding 3,500 kg, provided that the permissible total mass of the vehicle combination does not exceed 12,000 kg.”

Overall conclusion: He who writes, remains. This also applies here. Reading and interpreting, asking people who should actually know, is one thing, but something in writing is quite another!
Fear, as is well known, is a bad advisor. However, in this case, it unfortunately feels once again as if ignorance is being exploited, possibly to quickly arrange a medical and eye examination, an unnecessary extension, or even a complete re-examination of a driver’s license in theory and practice. Because none of those mentioned above asked me to send my driver’s license to provide binding information based on it. I find that quite concerning.
P.S. Also learned that an old “pink paper driver’s license” must be exchanged by a deadline, otherwise it gets expensive, or that driver’s licenses generally expire and must also be formally renewed. So definitely find out your deadline and act.
